Farewell to a faithful friend

Dear Maggie

Maggie passed away yesterday. She fell 14 floors from a window in Michael’s room. 可能他们主人与狗的缘份已禁,该是Maggie 走的时候了。相逢,离别,从逢,永别。。。 全都随缘,只求没有亏待或任何的亏欠就好。

Mic invited a few of us over to his place for dinner yesterday as Trevor and Jason (the tour operators we met in Phuket) came here for a holiday. I was on the bus to Mic’s place to help prepare the night’s steamboat dinner when he called. He told me to cancel dinner. He sounded calm. All he said was Maggie fell from his apartment and was dead.

It was about 6:20pm. The bus was very crowded. I was standing at the hollowed out area with people’s hair in my face everywhere I turned when I took the call. The circumference of my eyes burned. There was a certain unreal-ness to what I just heard.

Maggie is a very spunky breed of wired hair fox terrier. Mic got her from SPCA about 2 years back and her previous owner was somewhat abusive, that’s how she came under SPCA’s shelter. I visited her the first day she started her life with Mic. I won’t say she is a very good-looking dog, but she had this very easy connection with people. She had this most adorable way of shaking her buttocks while wagging her short tail rapidly at the same time. She does this little hop sometimes and it looked as if her ass was vibrating and it was so cute. That’s what I remember of her.

And when Mic goes on holidays or in-camp trainings, Maggie would come live with my family or I would house-sit her. Joy doesn’t seem to welcome her stay with us very much, but the 2 of them did have some fun times together. Maggie was a very quiet dog. She hardly barks or has any temper. It seemed like all she wanted in life was to love you, play with you, and allow you to love her back. She’s just contented lying by your feet while you watch TV or work on the computer. She didn’t ask for very much. She’s a good dog. That’s the Maggie I know.

So when I arrived at Mic’s place and saw her stiffened body, tears rolled out. Her eyes were opened. There were still the small beady black eyes like longan seeds, but now, they were vacant. A lot of blood came out of her left ear but her face and body were not smashed in or anything. She looked like she was before except for the blood and that unblinking blank stare. We tried to close her eyes, but it remained open. Mic held on to her for a very long time.

But it came time to let her go. We brought her to the Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital to be cremated. There’re 3 choices :

1)       mass cremation, no collection of ashes – S$200 plus

2)       partitioned cremation, with collection of ashes – S$325

3)       private cremation with viewing of cremation process and ashes collection – S$500 plus

Mic decided on option 2. A death certificate was issued and a copy must be faxed or sent to AVA if the dog is licensed. Also need to inform SPCA in case they found out about the death and think that it was due to abuse and that could get sticky. Mic wasn’t even home when the accident occurred. For reasons unknown, Maggie managed to climb to the bedroom window, pushed out the window and squeezed herself through such a tiny opening. Mic suspected she must’ve been trying to run away from the thunder. The weather yesterday was rainy with loud claps of thunder. Maggie is terrified of thunders, gets hysterical and would find places to hide or try to ‘run’ away from it. Well, perhaps with death, she found her final escape.

Dun feel so bad. This is the best idea in her mind at that moment but ended in a tragedy. Hope Mic and you get over her soon.

Send my consolations to Mic. Yup, Maggie is an obedient little girl.
It could be due to the thunder but i thought that most dogs would find that being under a bed/table/chair would be most comforting during a storm. *puzzled*
