Are you being left behind?

For quite a while now, i’ve been incessant with self-help books on just about improving every aspect of my life. The renovation is never quite done; I could never quite move in and feel comfortable in my skin. The feeling that you’re not quite there, you don’t know where you’re heading, but you just know you need to get ahead. Ahead of what? Nobody knows.

So in our forward-looking pursuits, to fumble ahead of the race, we need to free ourselves of ties that bind us, of cares that weigh us down, of responsibilities both emotional and psychological that will thwart our speed of survival. Survival because with just about any information being so readily available processed by an ever shrinking computing prowess (small family units… single child or not more than 3), we’ll become obsolete if we so much as bend down to tie our shoelaces. So we need to live a week in a day, and learn to be not just hunters, but as gatherers and farmers. In Singaporean lingo… ‘one-leg kicking’.

But in our survival highway, who do we leave behind? What if, one day, I’m the one being left behind? And like it or not, this day will come… We will not always be young, healthy and strong.

Perhaps experiencing a stage where the brimness of future is brought so much quickly forward, the themes captured by Walt Disney’s animated feature, Dinosaurs, described so true to heart the struggle of leaving the old, weak and injured behind, or helping each other along.

Dialogue Extract :

Bruton : Why is he doing this? Pushing them on with false hope?
Plio : It’s hope that’s gotten them this far.
Bruton : But why doesn’t he let them accept their fate? I’ve accepted mine.
Plio : And what is your fate?
Bruton : To die here. It’s the way things are.
Plio : Only if you give up, Bruton. It’s your CHOICE, not your fate.
