Have a Break & Unbreak Ourselves

In life, there is no lack of the things that’ll break us… wham-bam abusive relationships, bidding a loved one eternal adieu, lost and not found of something important, being a doctor’s ATM, the Cher Madonna Robert Redford Goldie Hawn-without-plastic-surgery effect, low self-image, high self-expectations, vampire bosses, money no enough, societal expectations, spiritual warfare, failures, fears… so before our little behaviourial nuances to cope turn into full-on psychopathic manifestations, have a break once in a while from all these back-breaking responsibilities of living!

This post is created as an entry to Kit Kat’s Yer Big Break! Blog Challenge. Bloggers are given the challenge of creating an entry to express what “taking a break” meant to us. If the entry is creative enough, the blogger will be picked as one of 10 finalists to cover a series of exclusive Kit Kat events till July to vie for a chance to win a 4D/3N trip to Phuket, Hong Kong, or Taiwan! I’ve never been to Taiwan so hopefully I get a chance to take a break there 🙂

So, here’s my interpretation of what “taking a break” means. In a nutshell, the idea is about taking a break from the savouries of life with a speckle of sweetness; to remember to have dessert from all those main courses. Since Kit Kat is a snack, my thought is to use food to communicate the message. The pastas / spaghettis / noodles represent the many things we have to deal with daily. They are the carbos and staples in our diet, the bread-and-butter issues for survival. They form the backdrop, the source for the blanket response of “same old, same old” whenever someone asks how are we doing lately. They are our usual, constant, everyday state of mind, environment and reality.

But sometimes, we just need a break from the consistency.

That’s where Kit Kat comes in. Or a holiday. A hobby. Or anything we do to take a break before modus operandi wear us out or break us down. So Kit Kat or not, I hope the following images may serve as a reminder for you to unwind, add fun, and untangle once in a while!

When life feels like it's all wound up in chaos and randomness without direction, and you have no idea where you are heading... Take a break. Don't be too hard on yourself and don't be in a hurry to get somewhere. Acknowledging the chaos and lost in direction is the first step to unwinding them. It spurs us to seek out a unique path for ourselves.

Is everyday feeling like a straight road to boredom? Whether the norm for you is doing the same things repeatedly or having excitement everyday (yes, when fun and the unexpected happen everyday, that becomes a norm)... Take a break. Do something out of the ordinary, or do the ordinary extraordinarily! Cook a plate of chocolate pasta perhaps? Ha.

Sometimes our hearts and/or minds get tangled up. We know something is bad for us but we cannot untangle ourselves; we cannot leave the person that hurts us, the career that isn't suitable, or the substance that is destroying our health... Take a break. Open up, seek help. Just like how the noodles untangle when boiled, sometimes we need to be in hot soup to straighten ourselves out. It's okay to be a mess. It means we are living!

I hope what I’ve tried to express makes sense. Taking a break helps us regain focus and reinstate balance for the longer road ahead. There are many ways to take a break, but the best of course, is to take a vacation for some healthy escape!

Now, here’s a piece of good news. If you are in the creative field, you can win yourself some cash and a chance for your design to be featured islandwide! Organised specially for illustrators, designers and artists, the Kit Kat’s Yer Big Break! contest calls for a creative spin on what taking a break means to you. Submit your entry before 20 June 2011 and stand to win S$1,000 in cash prize can a chance to brag to your friends when you see your design on the roads. For more contest details, submission criteria and the entries so far, please click here for the content’s Facebook fan page.

Okay, before I sign off this post, let’s take a break and have some fun now. The placements of Kit Kat bars in the 3 photos come together to form a letter. Look at the photos again. Can you guess the alphabet?

Now apply that letter twice to whatever situation that’s frustrating you. Have a good breaKK! 🙂
