Day 038 : Body of Devotion

Skipped lunch to do a quick walkabout and shoot along Serangoon Road to feel the pulsating beats drummed up during Thaipusam.

The festival is a celebration of Lord Murugan’s defeat of a powerful demon with a spear (vel) given to him on Thaipusam day. ‘Thai’ is the name of a month in the Hindu calendar and ‘pusam’ means shining star. On this day of Thai, that star shines the brightest which also marks the day Lord Murgan received the weapon.

Hence, a lot of devotees pierce spears through their cheeks, tongues and body or carry kavadis adnored with spears in honour of the deity’s victory over evil forces.

Here’s wishing everyone great triumphs over evils be they personal demons or human devils! 🙂
