Day 271 : Ash Bribes

Mid-Autumn Festival is upon us and the Chinese temple opposite my flat had all these offerings from devotees all strung up. On these paper packages that will be burnt were written names and wishes as well as thanksgiving to the gods.

I wonder how much one of these packages cost. Wouldn’t it be nice if the money used to bribe the gods is donated to charity in the diety’s name? I don’t mean to be rude or insensitive but why burn money when it can be used to feed and clothe someone?

Gods exist to be protectors and help mankind as a benevolent force in times of hardships and troubles. Wouldn’t it be closer to what the gods represent if we channel our devotion in ways that benefit our fellow humankind who are suffering? Hmm…
